OEM VW Radiators

What a car radiator does is keep your engine running relatively cool -- cool enough, in fact, to help prevent overheating. How car radiators work generally, though, is more complicated. The process starts inside your Volkswagen with coolant. As your engine runs, it creates heat, and the liquid captures that heat as it flows back and forth between inlets and outlets, through a radiator hose. A radiator cap compresses it as it travels, which helps the fluid take on more heat than it could unpressurized. After it captures the heat, the fins on the outside of your radiator expel it, and a fan disperses it into the air nearby. The result: your engine keeps working as well as it can, and resultantly, it lasts longer.

Signs of a Bad or Failing Radiator

Sometimes, a factory radiator goes bad, though, even one made by VW. If it does, it usually causes all kinds of problems. For example, your HVAC system starts malfunctioning. Plus, your engine can not only overheat but also shut down completely. Luckily, identifying radiator problems is easy. Fin damage and sludgy coolant usually indicate them. Also, listen for odd noises coming from your engine, and smell for a sweet, syrupy smell. The latter is ethylene glycol, and it indicates a coolant leak. Look at your temperature gauge if you think you might be dealing with radiator failure. If your engine's running hot, it'll tell you. Then, inspect your vehicle thoroughly.
