How Do Brakes Work?

When you press your brake pedal, your Volkswagen stops. Simple, right? How brakes work, though - that's more complex. What do they do to make that slowdown happen? The process starts with the brake pistons in your VW moving along the bore of its brake cylinder, forcing brake fluid through hoses and lines to its brake calipers. Each brake caliper has a brake pad installed on top of it. When the liquid reaches a caliper, it presses it to a brake rotor. Older Volkswagen models may have a brake shoe and brake drum instead. A control module or some wheel speed sensors may even take part in the process. Either way, the rotor and caliper (or drum and shoe) rub together, producing friction. This resistance is what slows your wheels and eventually stops your tires from turning.

When Should I Replace My Brakes?

Unfortunately, all brake parts can go bad, even those VW makes. They can just get too old or too damaged. So, when do brakes need replacement? Look for signs you've got brake problems. The most obvious: warning lights, brake shudders, strange noises, or an overly soft or low brake pedal. Worse symptoms: loss of brake grip, longer stopping times, and pulling sideways unintentionally when braking. The worst: grinding noises. They often mean rotor damage, the result of worn-out pads.
