If you know your favorite automaker, then you know Volkswagen Jetta, and there's a great chance that you know yours very well. It's a compact family car that's been around since 1980, as a two- and four-door sedan and a five-door wagon, but either way, a worthy sibling of the beloved Volkswagen Golf hatchback.
It was with the second generation, called Mark 2, which debuted in 1984, that the car's popularity took off. By 1991, it had become one of the best-selling cars in North America. Its third generation would appear in 1993 and instantly become a huge hit. For the fourth generation, in 1999, it'd even start taking design cues from the equally adored Volkswagen Passat.
With the fifth generation in 2005, it would become only the second VW car to debut at a US auto show, after the Volkswagen New Beetle. It'd also take a new styling direction. From there, Jetta would begin competing in motorsports, for instance, from 2008 to 2010, and by the sixth generation, which began in 2011, a Turbo Hybrid model would be in the works for the distance traveler. The model would come out in 2013.
Today, the car is in its seventh generation, as it has been since 2018. Built on the MQB platform, it's got the same underpinnings as the Volkswagen Atlas SUV, plus loads of the latest tech. However one looks at it, though, it's a top-selling VW model -- and for a history of good reasons.
