Your Volkswagen ignition system creates the spark your car or SUV needs to start running under its own power. How ignitions work is straightforward. Turn your key; an ignition switch activates, sending current through the starter solenoid and drawing high voltage from the car battery via the ignition coil. The electrical charge then gets sent to the spark plugs attached to the combustion chambers on the engine cylinder head. Each plug lead captures electricity in turn, with help from the camshaft or crankshaft. The spark ignites the mixture of fuel and air in the cylinder's chambers; the starter motor cranks (starts) your engine, its pistons pump, and it produces the power your vehicle needs to run and stay running. A timing mechanism or, in certain cases, electronic controls, help keep parts working in sync.
If your VW model won't start, though, you may have a bad ignition. Luckily, there are telltale signs to look for that'll tell you this is the problem. For instance:
- If you can't turn your key
- If the vehicle stalls
- If your dash lights and displays flicker
- If the starter motor doesn't turn
