OEM VW Fuel Pumps

Your original Volkswagen fuel pump has the crucial job of sending gas from your tank up your fuel line and into your fuel rail, where your fuel injectors spray it into your engine cylinder. Your spark plugs ignite the gas, and as a result, your vehicle runs on its own power. The pump assembly has a DC motor that powers the process. Of course, if you're driving an older Volkswagen with a mechanical fuel pump, your engine moves the pump lever vertically as your camshaft spins, creating suction and transferring your fuel. Whether the fuel pump in your Volkswagen is mechanical or electric, however, many other auto parts work alongside it. For example, there's a filter on every pump's end that keeps impurities in your gas out of the fuel line. That's your fuel filter. Secondly, there's a float in your gas tank with an arm attached to it that tells your fuel gauge how much gas is left in your tank. Yet another part submerged in your fuel, an electrical resistor, tells a Low Fuel Warning to light up when it's exposed to air; that's how you can tell when your vehicle is extremely low on gas. So, how long do OEM fuel pumps last? Since, on average, the answer is anywhere from 100,000 to 200,000 miles, it's hard to tell exactly. If you think you need to replace yours, it's better to look for signs it's going out. They include a stuttering, surging, or squeaking engine, a reduction in fuel economy, and just plain not being able to start your car.
