OEM VW Control Arms

Control arms are important parts of a front suspension. They're also called "A arms." A Volkswagen can have two to four of them. What they do is connect wheel assemblies or steering knuckles to the frames or bodies of cars and SUVs. The outer ends attach to ball joints. These can be either permanently fastened, pressed on, or bolted into place. They also have rubber bushings that allow vertical swing, which smooths out the ride as the vehicle goes over bumps and potholes.

When all the parts of a control arm work together as they should, wheels and tires stay on the road like they should. When they don't, however -- say, if they get damaged or wear out from use and age -- they can bend or break, and that's sure to make driving unsafe in any car or SUV.

Luckily, when control arms go bad, the signs are clear. They include:

• Brake drift when driving across uneven terrain
• Loss of some control while driving
• Clunks or popping noises

These symptoms most often indicate either a worn ball joint or torn bushing. Both, however, can result in wheels completely detaching from the suspension. To avoid that disaster, be sure you hoist your VW up on a lift at least once a year to do a full inspection. If it turns out you need to replace control arms, be sure you buy genuine Volkswagen. Those your brand makes are designed compatible with the model you drive, after all.
