OEM VW Air Intake Parts

The air intake is a critical part of a Volkswagen engine. Also called the air induction system, its job is to draw air into the engine cylinders through the intake manifold, where it can mix with fuel. Spark plugs ignite the mix, which burns and produces the power that the engine runs on.

A cold air intake is a little different. It relocates the engine air filter to just outside the engine compartment. Usually, that's just above a wheel well or near a fender. This enables pulling in cooler and therefore denser air, which can slightly improve engine power output.

How air intakes work is simple. The process starts when air passes through the engine filter, where contaminants get captured before they can enter the engine. Then, air levels get regulated by parts like a mass airflow sensor, an air metering system, and one or more oxygen sensors. Together, they monitor air movement and exhaust levels. They then feed info about them back to an engine control unit (ECU).

When air intake parts stop working right, other problems often follow. Luckily, there are signs to tell you what's going on. You can look for a Check Engine light on the dash, but it's a better idea to look for unusually fast engine rev or abnormal idling speeds. They usually mean induction system failure. Plug in a code reader and run an inspection to determine what's going on.
